These mighty animals have many powerful associations, especially for the Indigenous Peoples of North America, because they are blessed with some unusual traits. The word caribou is derived from the Native American word yalipu, which means “snow-shoveler” in the Algonquin tongue. Indigenous People saw caribou pushing snow away from the ground with their hooves and antlers, so they could eat the vegetation underneath
